Breakfast Bar Stools – What to Look For

If you are looking for breakfast bar stools, then this is a great place to start your search. There are several types of breakfast bar stools – swivel bar stools, adjustable height stools, folding bar stools, leather or fabric, stools with a back and stools without a back. Which type you choose will depend on how you plan to use them and possibly on how well they complement your existing decor.

Breakfast bar stools are usually shorter than a regular bar stool so that they will kit under a kitchen or dining room table. Most will measure 18 to 20 inches tall. If you are planning to use the stools around an island or at your counter, then the taller standard kitchen bar stool may be a better choice.

Choose the Right Stool for Your Table or Counter

Most counter height stools have seats that are 24 to 26 inches from the floor. Use these stools with a table that is 35 to 37 inches from the floor.

If your table is 41 to 43 inches from the floor, use bar height stools that are 29 to 31 inches from the floor.

Use extra tall bar stools which measure 34 to 36 inches from the floor when your table or counter stands 44 to 47 inches tall.

Choose the Right Material for Your Bar Stool

Wood – Wood is the most traditional material for breakfast bar stools. It is durable, sturdy, easy to clean and easy to maintain. Consider beechwood, maple, oak or rattan.

Metal – You can find bar stools made with several different types of metal. There are stainless steel and aluminum bar stools which work really well for indoor use. Wrought iron stools work great outdoors as they are more weather-resistant than some of the other materials. Metal bar stools are a great addition to a room with a contemporary motif.

Upholstery – If you’re looking for style and comfort, consider upholstered bar stools. Look for materials such as linen, faux suede, leather or vinyl. Upholstered stools give you the most creative range as it is easier to find a great variety of colors, fabrics and designs.

Plastic - Plastic bar stools are durable, easy to clean and can lend a contemporary slant to a room. Similar to the upholstered stools, plastic kitchen bar stools come in a wide variety of colors.

Recycled materials - If you are environmentally conscious, then stools made from recycled materials may be of interest. These stools can be made from recycled aluminum, wood, metal or plastic.
